4. WHEN CAN YOU SEE THE NORHERN LIGHTS?
You can see the Northern Lights in our area when it is dark and the sky is clear. First Northern Lights of the season can usually be seen in the end of August and the last around the middle of April. The shorter the day is, the bigger the chance is to see the Lights. On the other hand, the weeks around the Autumn and Spring Equinoxes offer the best Aurora activity levels during the year. Statistically the Northern Lights are most common daily after 21 until the early hours of the morning. During the month, the full moon creates light pollution that can dim the viewing of the Lights but at the same time the full moon lights the landscape for more dramatic photographs. You can read more about the Northern Lights in Inari here.
5. WHERE IN INARI CAN YOU SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS?
Inari village is quite small and therefore there is not so much light pollution so that the Northern Lights can be seen from the village. Our hotel is located by River Juutua and the area behind the hotel is dark for viewing. We turn off our landscape lights when the Auroras are visible. The bay of Lake Inari is also nearby (5 minutes walk) and from the lake ice you can have an unrestricted view of the sky.
If the weather forecast is cloudy for our area or the Aurora forecast is weak or if you are focused on taking great Aurora photographs, we recommend booking an Aurora hunting programme. Aurora hunting by car will take you on a search for the clear sky. Other Aurora hunting activities will take you to a location with minimum amount of light pollution and even the weaker Lights can be seen well.
6. WHEN ARE WINTER ACTIVITIES AVAILABLE? HOW CAN I BOOK THEM?
Inari village winter activities start as soon as the snow and ice conditions allow. Officially the winter programme starts on December 1st but usually first activities can be booked already around the middle of November. Activities are available usually at least until the middle of April. In early winter we have a good activity programme available until snowmobiles and husky safaris are bookable.
You can book winter activities in advance directly from this website: https://visitinari.fi/activities/
You can also book them on the spot from our reception. Our most popular activity is the husky safari, so especially if your stay in Inari is short, we recommend that you book this in advance. Other activities have better availability. We also recommend that you book the Aurora hunting programmes on the spot or with short notice, as then we already have a credible weather forecast and can recommend the right kind of activity for you!
Even though parts of our main building derive from the 1930’s, we are accessable for all! There is a ramp to our restaurant and it’s main dining room with great views to River Juutua. Our fascilities include an accessable toilet. In our more modern part of the hotel, we have also one accessable room, also with a great view to the river and also a properly eqipped bathroom. Close to the room you will find a designated parking space and access to the restaurant.
